What is the public database and how to use it?

The public database can be a valuable help when creating pedigrees and researching bloodlines.

How can you make the best use of it?

In the public database, you can browse through pigeons that have already been entered by other users. This can be useful if you own a pigeon whose ancestors are already listed in our public database. Instead of manually entering parents or grandparents when building your pedigree, you can simply select a pigeon that already exists in the database, and the pedigree fields will be automatically filled in for you.

How does AviRings collect data for the public database?

When a fancier imports their pigeons from other pedigree programs into our application or enters them manually, they have the option in their profile to either hide or publicly display their pigeon database. If you do not want others to see your list of pigeons, you can click the “Hide all pigeons” button. Otherwise, you can select “Show all pigeons.”

By default, all users have their pigeons set to be publicly visible.

What does it mean if your pigeons are visible in the public database?

Even if you allow other fanciers to see your pigeons in the public database, this does not mean they have full access to everything.

The purpose of the public database is to help fanciers build a reliable and relevant shared dataset - meaning that the information about pigeons should be as accurate as possible, which also contributes to the correctness of complete pedigrees.

If you choose to “show your pigeons publicly,” other fanciers can view their family tree structure. They can also copy your pigeon into their own database if they want to use it for building their own pedigrees. Important: If they copy your pigeon to their database, this will not change anything for your pigeon. In your database, everything will stay the same.

However, other fanciers cannot see your full pedigrees - only a structural preview of the pedigree (pedigree preview). See screenshot below.

The public database is constantly growing. The AviRings Pedigree App system strives to keep databases “clean” and as realistic as possible so that fanciers can help each other save time and reduce the need for manual data entry when creating pedigrees.
